The Poppy Project – children and seniors work together to recognize Remembrance Day

Nov 11, 2022 | Cindy Males, Public Relations and Communications Specialist

Some North Bay youngsters became art teachers at Canadore College this week.  Students from the grade 3/4 class at Alliance Public School helped members of Living Fit Inside-Out draw poppies during an art class in The Village. Christine Bretherick, an advocate of the arts in education, had a prior visit with the students and helped them draw poppies while they reflected on Col. John McCrae’s famous poem “In Flanders Fields.”

While helping the adults draw poppies, one student was overheard to say, “You just draw a circle, then draw the petals around it.” Another taught: “When you draw a stem, keep the lines wide so that you can get the paint brush between the lines.” The seniors happily played along and accepted the lessons.

Programs at The Village bring young and old together in a variety of intergenerational projects.

The Poppy Project artwork was displayed in The Village before being returned to the artists, young and not-as-young, who painted them.
