Canadore College was thrilled to welcome 30 students from Almaguin Highlands Secondary School, located in South River, Ontario. These bright young minds are part of the Health and Wellness Specialist High Skills Major program, a specialized initiative approved by the Ministry of Education. Last Thursday, these potential healthcare professionals embarked on a comprehensive tour of Canadore's School of Health Sciences programs.

With dreams of making a difference in the healthcare sector, the students embarked on a journey through the program's state-of-the-art labs. They explored the respiratory therapy lab, dental hygiene lab, and nursing lab, gaining valuable insights into the intricacies of these medical disciplines. Moreover, the students had the privilege of learning about The Village, a facility providing essential healthcare services, including physical activities tailored for seniors.

Guiding them through the campus was Mabel Plourde-Doran from the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Program and were also the experience of the program's augmented reality headsets.

One student, Summer from Almaguin Highlands, shared her newfound confidence in pursuing the OTA/PTA program at Canadore College after this insightful trip.

In the afternoon, Professor Plourde-Doran hosted a workshop on K-Taping Therapy, delving into the fundamental principles and benefits of this innovative therapy. The therapy specializes in rectifying issues related to muscles, ligaments, and fascia.

Katie, another student from Almaguin, expressed her gratitude for the enriching learning experience, emphasizing its significance for those passionate about health and wellness.

This excursion served as an invaluable opportunity for potential students to gain a deeper understanding of Canadore College's offerings and the support systems it extends to all students. Canadore takes great pride in its collaborative efforts with secondary schools, providing early insights into opportunities for prospective students.

Professor Plourde-Doran noted, "The students' enthusiasm was contagious. Choosing a career path after high school can be a daunting task, but knowledge is empowerment. I was thrilled to introduce the AHSS students to The Village. We boast exceptional learning spaces, utilize cutting-edge technology, foster outstanding interprofessional and intergenerational experiences, and offer remarkable pathways to success."
