FAQ

Your choice of career path requires you to meet specific health and safety standards as outlined by Ontario law and based on agency policies. The Ontario government and the organizations offering you professional placements have mandated specific medical and non-medical requirements that must be met by you before you can begin any professional placements. These measures are there to protect you, your colleagues and those that you will serve in your placement. Canadore College is committed to meeting standards of practice by ensuring that students attain and maintain required certifications and meet recommended immunization standards.

Clearance means that the student has successfully met the minimum requirements for proceeding onto placement based on program-specific non-academic requirements. Students must be ‘cleared’ in order to proceed onto placement.

Obtaining non-academic requirements can be a time-consuming task.  You should start the process of completing your requirements early. Review your program-specific Non-Academic Requirements Checklist found here for tips on recommended timelines for obtaining your requirements.

If you do not complete your non-academic requirements, you will not be permitted to attend placement. Failure to adhere to the requirements deadline will result in a hold on your academic progress and may result in additional charges and fees.

Please refer to the Non-Academic Requirements for Placement: Information and Clearance Deadlines link found here. Click your program bar to see the relevant content.

You must complete the following:

  • Upload all documentation to the appropriate location as directed though your program specific How to Submit Non-Academic Requirements document found through the main Placement page.
  • Keep all your original documents and your electronic copies in a safe place as the School or Agency may request to see them in the future.
  • Ensure your non-academic requirements are valid throughout the duration of your placement(s).

Upload all documentation to the appropriate location as directed though your program specific How to Submit Non-Academic Requirements document found through the main Placement page.

Please refer to your program-specific requirements table above to see when your documents are due. Use the Non-Academic Requirements Checklist found here to help you stay on track with your requirements.

Non-academic requirements and submission deadlines are communicated to students in advance of the deadline to give students adequate time to prepare and plan ahead. Completion and submission of non-academic requirements is mandatory and the deadline is not negotiable. If you have any questions or concerns, contact your Placement Coordinator as soon as possible.

If you submit your requirements through Verified, then you will receive an email notification from that service indicating the status of your Electronic Requirements Verification appointment. For more information on Verified, go here. If you submit your requirements through an iLearn course shell, you will receive email confirmation from your Placement Coordinator advising you of your status.

Students are responsible for meeting minimum non-academic requirements in order to proceed onto placement. All costs and service fees associated with obtaining non-academic requirements for placement are the sole responsibility of the student. Failure to achieve placement clearance by the posted deadline will mean that you will not be able to proceed with placement and you will have to wait for the next offering to register again. This is likely to cause delays in your progression in the program and is likely to result in additional fees.

Students are responsible for all costs related to non-academic requirements. Costs are dependent upon each student’s needs. Doctor’s notes, laboratory blood work, x-rays, and immunizations may or may not require fees.

It may take several weeks (or months) to obtain all your non-academic requirements. Plan ahead! Refer to the Non-Academic Requirements Checklist for your program found here for recommended timelines for obtaining your non-academic requirements.

Please review the content relevant to your program found on the Placement page. If you still have questions, contact your Placement Coordinator.

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all non-academic requirements are valid throughout the duration of your placement(s). If a non-academic requirement will expire during the school year, the student must renew it (before it expires) and submit the updated documentation. It is advised that students ensure that documents are valid for the academic year.

Your Placement Coordinator will be in touch to advise you of your assigned placement location and schedule. Note that it may take several days for your placement coordinator to confirm your placement – if you have any questions or concerns, you can contact your Placement Coordinator.

Some programs have flexibility for taking student input for placement assignments, and others do not. Your Placement Coordinator will let you know if you can provide input into your placement assignment.

Some placement host agencies have additional requirements that students must complete in order to participate in placement. Your Placement Coordinator will advise you of any additional requirements needed in order to attend placement. These additional requirements can include but are not limited to: Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training, COVID-19 vaccination (if not already required by your program), agency-specific orientation training, agency-specific onboarding documentation, etc.

Contact your Placement Coordinator as soon as possible to discuss your concerns. Your Placement Coordinator will review your case and determine if an accommodation can be made. Note that since many of the requirements are based on Ontario law and agency policies, it is not always possible to accommodate medical or faith-based requests for accommodation with certain placement host agencies.
